Fetish Labor

Vik created this piece for the first installment of “Frankies Clown House (2023)” in Brooklyn, New York alongside other performers such as Paul Soileau (Christeen) and Dancing in Tongues. For this piece, Vik collected rocks from Houston to bring to New York that would be bound to their body during the performance. Geoffrey Muller would accompany Vik on banjo. As a subtle homage to the south with Muller on banjo, shirtless in overalls, the piece was nuanced on the manual labor that many folks experience in the south, including Vik’s two years working for a nursery. It also works to desexualize the female body in the prospect of manual labor. The rocks tied to Vik create bruises and pollock impact through out the piece until Vik rips the rocks off cutting small lesions into their hands from the force.
